Oven Unit Element Wire. Balanced heat distribution in the oven
is obtained through uniform spacing of the spiral-wound element
wire. If the coils become distorted or lengthened by careless handling,
they can be adjusted with a pair of needle nose pliers. The open-coil
resistance element wire reaches oven operating temperature in a
matter of seconds and transfers heat quickly to the oven. 1n open-coil
ovens, some adjustment, are made to correct uneven browning of foods
being baked. Close the oven coil spacing by moving the wires to
the areas where additional heat is required, and open the oven coil
spacing where oven heat is to be reduced. Do this, however, only
if no other adjustment or correction will give satisfactory results.
If new oven element coils are added, they must be stretched uniformly
to slightly less thou the desired assembly length.
Oven Unit Terminal Connection. The oven unit electrical hosting
element wire is terminated at the terminal pins. Because of the
oven high operating temperature of the oven element, the terminal
connections must be properly made. If the terminal were to develop
resistance to the flow of current, energy would be dissipated in
the farm of heat. This additional beat at the terminal connections
would decrease the life of the oven element wire at that point.
To obtain a proper terminal connection and to minimize the Possibility
of oven failures due to resistance, note the following points: The
terminal washers used against the oven element wire must be clean
and new in appearance to make good electrical contact. If they show
any signs of rust or corrosion, they should be replaced. Monet is
generally used for terminal washers. However, nickel plated washers
and also silver-plated washers are sometimes used. Brass (alloy
or copper and me) cannot be used in terminal washers because the
alloy would oxidize, thus forming an insulating film which leads
to excessive, resistance. When element wire is heated, an oxide
coating forms on the exposed face of the wire. To make a terminal
connection with a used oven element, scrape the oxide coating from
the element leads with a knife. Do not nick the wire, for a reduction
in diameter will increase the resistance and lead to an early failure.
Be sure the end of the oven element, wire does not cross or lap
over the element under the washers because the pressure of the terminal
connection may cut partly through the element. The end beyond the
washer’s ear wrapped around the element lead. Avoid having
the cut end make contact with the oven element lead.
Oven Terminal Pins and Receptacle Inserts. The oven bake and oven
broil units on most electric ranges are removable. Terminal pins
no the heating oven and a receptacle block in the rear of the oven
are used to obtain an electrical connection. We terminal contact
pressure which can be felt when removing or installing an oven unit
is necessary to prevent burning and pitting of the terminal pins
and inserts. Defects in the oven unit terminal pins and receptacle
inserts that may be noticed by the user include: unit that is difficult
to remove an element wire failure at the terminal connection; erratic
oven temperature regulation or failure of the oven unit to heat.
If inspection of the terminal pins indicates arcing or burning,
both the terminal pins and receptacle inserts must be replaced.
Terminal pins and receptacle inserts are nickel-plated to increase
electrical conductivity and resist rust and corrosion.
