Refrigerators and home freezers
These two appliances are essentially the same and in principle both
resemble air conditioners. Although they are employed for different
purposes, refrigerators and home freezers include basically the
same components.
THE BASIC DIFFERENCE between a refrigerator and a home freezer is
in their operating temperature, and the degree of operating temperature
depends upon the amount of refrigerant which is being delivered
to the unit. In refrigerators, obviously the amount is less than
in comparably sized freezers. Since it possesses a greater charge
of refrigerant, a home freezer can generate a lower temperature
than the same size refrigerator.
The two, though, work on the same principle, and both operate like
air conditioners. For this reason, I suggest you read the previous
chapter to gain insight into functioning. This information will
help you understand how and why a refrigerator or home freezer fails.
When it comes to repairs, the home handyman's role is a limited
one. Lacking the tools necessary for discharging and recharging
the refrigeration system, and for cutting and flaring tubing, you
can only act against "exterior" causes of trouble. However,
knowing what can go wrong with a refrigerator and freezer, and understanding
the possible causes will put you in a better position to deal with
a professional serviceman. Refrigerator and freezer maintenance
DEPENDING ON THE KIND of units you possess, there are three things
you can do to keep a refrigerator and freezer in good shape. These
maintenance procedures will assure that the appliance operates at
maximum efficiency and will help keep failure to a minimum:
I. Clean the condenser coils periodically if they are exposed. Dirt
on an exposed condenser blocks circulation and drastically reduces
refrigerating efficiency. You can use a long-handled bristle brush
or vacuum cleaner.
2. If your model is non-self defrosting, defrost it regularly, especially
in hot weather. Frost builds up on the evaporator coils twice as
frequently in hot as in cold weather. Defrost the refrigerator and/or
freezer before the frost gets thick. Frost reduces the transfer
of heat, which impairs the efficiency of the unit. Frost also traps
and retains odors.
3. Try to keep the number of times that the refrigerator and freezer
doors are open to a minimum, and reduce the length of time you keep
doors open.
HOW FAR CAN YOU GO? That depends mostly on how
far you feel confident in going. That is why the troubleshooting
charts presented below are fairly detailed. At least, the list of
possible causes for failure will give you a good idea of what a
serviceman, if one is consulted, should check.
Keep in mind, though, that the home repairman is capable of doing
some checking for himself. For example to find a leak, look for
oil stains at joints. You can determine where the leak exists by
brushing a solution of soapy water over joints on the system's high
side (that is, on the side containing the compressor, condenser
and capillary) while the unit is running, and on joints on the low
side (evaporator and suction line side) while the unit is idle.
"Bubbly" soapy water signifies the area of leakage.
